Our story of Lean
The tower at Pisa began tilting when it was three stories high, because the foundations are three meters deep in soft ground. Work stopped for the best part of a century, which is probably what saved it — the soil consolidated. When building resumed, the masons tried to correct the lean by making the upper stories taller on the low side, so the tower is not a straight cylinder leaning over but a banana, curving back toward the vertical. The belfry at the top is built at a visible angle to everything below it. Twentieth-century engineering interventions made things worse before a stabilization in the nineteen-nineties removed soil from the high side and let it settle back by about half a degree. It is expected to stay up for another two centuries, and it is still not straight.

It may be Leon or Leonard with the ending removed, an English or Irish surname, or the ordinary English word. Four letters carry no information about which, and the record holds the name for children of both sexes.
Pronouncing Lean
LEEN
One syllable for most bearers, said like the English word. Families who read it as a shortening of Leon sometimes give it two, and the spelling supports both.

Fashion outlook
Lean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Four letters fit any field on any form and cannot be misspelled.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- One syllable is quick, clear and carries across a room.
- It is an ordinary English adjective, and readers will hear that before the name.
- Leon, Leann and Lena will all be written for it.
- Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has three answers and no evidence.
