Where it comes from

The story of Lavonne

Yves was a Breton and French name, carried by a thirteenth-century lawyer-saint who became the patron of Brittany, and Yvonne is its feminine. American naming of the mid-twentieth century used prefixes and endings as interchangeable parts, and La- attached to Vonne gave Lavonne, LaVonne and Lavon. It appears in the registers from the 1920s and peaked in the mid-1940s.

Meaning

yew

Through Yvonne, from the Germanic iv, 'yew', which French took as Yves and made feminine as Yvonne. The yew was the bow-wood of medieval Europe, so a name built on it carried a martial sense. The La- prefix is an American naming marker and carries no meaning of its own.

Fashion outlook

Lavonne has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Yvonne behind it has a documented French and Breton history and a concrete meaning.
  • The end stress gives it a distinct rhythm against a front-stressed surname.
  • Vonnie is a ready-made short form with its own record.
What to consider
  • The internal capital is a genuine choice between two established spellings.
  • It is firmly period-coded to the middle of the twentieth century.
