Two endings sit on the same stem and one of them looks classical. Lavonna closes with the doubled n and the plain a of an American build; Lavonia closes with -ia, the Latin ending that finishes Julia, Livia and Antonia, and the same name suddenly appears to have a Roman past.

Where it comes from

The story of Lavonia

One letter away is a country that no longer exists. Livonia was a real polity on the Baltic — roughly modern Latvia and Estonia — ruled for centuries by a crusading order, fought over by Poland, Sweden and Russia, and eventually partitioned out of existence entirely. Its name survives now in a Michigan suburb, in the name of a war, and in the adjective for a language that died in the twenty-first century when its last native speaker did. A name that sounds invented sits beside a place that was real and is gone.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The prefix carries no sense and the element it attaches to is a fragment of a French name rather than a word. The Latin-looking ending contributes nothing beyond an appearance.

Pronouncing Lavonia

luh-VOH-nee-uh

Four syllables with the stress on the second. The prefix is unstressed and reduces, and the Latin ending adds a full beat the other spelling does not have.

Lavonia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1923, with 37 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lavonia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The ending gives it a fuller and more formal shape than its relatives.
  • Nia and Von both sit inside it as short forms with different registers.
  • The rhythm is long and even and carries well.
What to consider
  • Lavonna and Lavonne are both in use and the spelling gets queried.
  • The classical ending is borrowed and the name has no classical descent.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
