Lavone
Feminine
Lavone is given to both — 1,173 girls and 117 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Lavone ends in a silent e that is doing real work: it marks the vowel before it as long, so the name ends on a full open o rather than a clipped one. That is the classic English use of a final e, and it is one of the few places a decorative-looking letter earns its place.

Our story of Lavone
The name at the far end of this one is built on the yew tree, and the yew is the reason England won several battles it had no business winning. The longbow was made of it, preferably from the boundary between the heartwood and the sapwood, which gives a natural spring; English yew was mostly too knotty, so the wood was imported from Spain and Italy in enormous quantities, and there were statutes requiring every cask of wine landed in England to come with a quota of bow staves. Whole European yew populations were logged out to supply it. The tree that produced the weapon is also the tree in every English churchyard, poisonous in every part, and the longest-lived thing growing in the country.

The front is an American prefix carrying nothing. The back is the tail of Yvonne, which had come loose and gone into circulation as a piece by the time this name was built. Since neither half arrives with a sense, the compound has none, and that is a complete description rather than a gap.
Pronouncing Lavone
luh-VOHN
Two syllables with the stress at the back and a long o in it, which is what the final e is there to guarantee. Without the e the vowel would be short and the name would be a different one.

Fashion outlook
Lavone sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The final e does a real job rather than a decorative one, which is unusual.
- Final stress gives the name a definite finish and makes it carry when called.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
- Lavonne with two n's is commoner and will be written instead.
- The name is firmly dated to the early twentieth century in American ears.
