Where it comes from

Our story of Lavette

The two borrowed endings do different things to a name's rhythm and that is the whole of the difference between this and its twin. The French one takes the stress onto itself and closes the word on a consonant, so the name ends firmly and carries well when called; the Italian one adds a vowel after the same consonant, which pushes the stress back a syllable and lets the name fall away softly at the end. Neither is better. What is worth noticing is that American families choosing between them were choosing a rhythm rather than a language, and that both endings had been detached from their grammars long enough to be used on anything. The French word for a dishcloth was not consulted at any stage.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No meaning. The front is an American prefix carrying nothing and the ending is a French diminutive borrowed for its shape. The French word that matches the whole spelling is unrelated, being built on the verb for washing, and the resemblance is a coincidence that runs the wrong way to be useful.

Pronouncing Lavette

luh-VET

Two syllables with the stress at the back, which the French ending brings with it. The Italian version of the same name has three syllables and the weight in the middle, so the two are genuinely different in speech.

Lavette sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1967, with 67 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lavette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Final stress gives the name a definite finish and makes it carry when called.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • Every sound in it is ordinary English and it is never mispronounced twice.
What to consider
  • The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • The identical French word means a dishcloth, which is worth knowing before traveling.
  • Lavetta is the same name with the other ending and the two are confused constantly.
