Where it comes from

The story of Lavenia

Virgil gives Lavinia the entire plot and almost nothing else. She is the daughter of the Latin king, promised elsewhere, and the war that fills the second half of the Aeneid is fought over her. Her mother speaks for her, Turnus fights for her, and she stands there and blushes, in the most argued-over silence in Latin poetry. Readers have been trying to decide what that silence is doing for two thousand years. The American Lavinia who mattered most was also close to silent in public and decisive in private: Lavinia Dickinson kept house for her sister Emily, found the hand-sewn packets of poems in a drawer after her death, refused to let them go into the fire with the rest of the papers, and spent years pushing people until they were printed. Nearly everything anyone knows of Emily Dickinson exists because her sister would not let it drop.

Meaningscholars disagree

of Lavinium

The name and the ancient Latin town of Lavinium explain each other and neither explains itself. Both look older than Latin, and the trail stops there. Nothing supports the meanings sometimes printed for it, which are decorations added by later hands. What can be said is that the word was already a name and already a place when the earliest Latin writers reached for it, and that a word in that position has usually come from a language nobody kept records of.

How the name formed

  1. Lavinia in Latin, a name and a town at once
  2. Revived in English by readers of the Latin poets
  3. Vinnie and Viney in nineteenth-century households
  4. Lavenia where the register wrote what it heard

Four syllables with the stress on the second. The e in this spelling does no work the i did not already do; both are spelling the same swallowed vowel, and the name sounds identical either way.

Lavenia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 34 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lavenia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a long unbroken literary record behind it and still reads as a person rather than as a costume.
  • Vinnie is a genuinely old short form and gives a formal name an unfussy everyday half.
  • It travels: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian all use it with the spelling barely moving.
What to consider
  • This is the minority spelling. Lavinia is what most people will write, and your child will be correcting it for life.
  • Four syllables invite shortening, and the world will do the shortening whether or not you approve of the result.
