Our story of Laurinda
The two routes matter more than they look. A name with a real Portuguese history has a body of bearers behind it, a pronunciation that is settled in its own country, and a meaning that can be given without hedging. A name assembled in America from a front and an ending has none of those things, however identical the spelling. Families in the same city may hold both versions and not know it, one having brought the name from Madeira or Cape Verde and the other having made it in a hospital in the nineteen fifties. Nothing on a birth certificate records which, and after two generations nobody in either family can say.

laurel
If the name is the Portuguese one, the root is the Latin word for the laurel and the reading is reasonably secure. If it was built in America from a familiar front and a fashionable ending, no reading applies, because the ending carries nothing. Both routes reach the same eight letters and the record does not separate them.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Portuguese says the first syllable with a fuller vowel and nasalises nothing here, so the name travels between the two languages with very little damage.

Fashion outlook
Laurinda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
