In the German-speaking Alps it is a man's name, and specifically the name of a dwarf king who keeps a rose garden and whose story is one of the oldest pieces of literature the region has.

The story of Laurin
King Laurin has a garden of roses in the Dolomites, fenced with a silken thread, and the poem turns on what happens when a party of knights rides through it. He is defeated, humiliated and eventually reconciled, and in the version most often told he curses the garden so that it will not be seen by day or by night, forgetting to mention dusk, which is why the Rosengarten massif turns pink at sunset. The story is medieval, the mountains are real and still carry the name, and the connection between the two is the kind of thing that keeps a legend alive in a place where the landscape confirms it every clear evening. The name is a live men's name in the Tyrol and in southern Germany, which means an American girl carrying it will find it belongs to somebody else's grandfather abroad.
Meaning
from Laurentum
The parent name means a person from a particular Italian town, and the town's own name is probably connected to the laurel, which puts the plant two steps away rather than one. This is worth stating plainly because the laurel reading is printed everywhere as though it were direct. The German name is a separate matter and may have a different origin entirely; the two forms arrived at the same letters independently.

Fashion outlook
Laurin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, clear and familiar-sounding without being any of the names it resembles.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
- It has a genuine and rather wonderful legend attached to it in another language.
- Lauren is the far commoner spelling and this one will be converted into it.
- In German-speaking countries it is a man's name, and your child will meet that.
- The stress differs between the American and the German reading of the same letters.
