Where it comes from

The story of Laurette

The Romans thought the laurel could not be struck by lightning. Pliny records it as an established belief, and Suetonius says the emperor Tiberius wore a laurel wreath during thunderstorms and went indoors, which suggests he was hedging. The tree was sacred to Apollo, planted by doorways, and carried by messengers bringing good news; the wreath given to victors and to poets comes from the same idea. Whether any of that reaches a modern Laurette is doubtful, but it is why the tree was worth naming children after in the first place, and the belief lasted well over a thousand years.

Laurette sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1923, with 71 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Laurette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a genuine French name spelled as France spells it.
  • The laurel behind it is a settled, pleasant meaning that is easy to explain.
  • Laurie is a ready English short form that asks nothing of anyone.
What to consider
  • Laurette, Loretta and Lauretta are close neighbors and will be confused.
  • The stress falls at the back, which English readers may not expect.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the turn of the twentieth century in America.
