Where it comes from

The story of Laurene

Laurene is an American lengthening of Laura, made with the same ending that produced Charlene and Darlene, and it stands beside Lorene, which is the identical name with the vowel written o. Both spellings are in the record from the end of the nineteenth century. The saint behind the whole family is Laurence of Rome, a deacon killed in the third century, and the manner of his death gave the Western Church one of its strangest patronages: he is said to have been roasted on a gridiron, and to have remarked partway through that they could turn him over, and on the strength of that line he became the patron of cooks, and later of comedians.

Fashion outlook

Laurene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The whole name is readable at first sight, and its short form Laurie is one of the most familiar in English.
  • It is the fuller written form of Laura without being a different name, which keeps a family line intact across generations.
  • The laurel behind it is a pleasant, settled meaning that is easy to explain.
What to consider
  • Laurene, Laureen, Lorene and Loreen are all in the record and are constantly taken for one another.
  • The ending places the name firmly in the middle of the twentieth century.
  • Said quickly it is hard to tell from Lorraine over the phone.
