Where it comes from

Our story of Lauree

Petrarch described seeing Laura in a church in Avignon on a particular day, and wrote poems about her for the next twenty years, and then for another decade after she died. There are three hundred and sixty-six of them. Whether she was a real woman is argued about, though the balance of evidence says she was; what is not argued about is the effect, because the sequence established the vocabulary of European love poetry almost single-handedly, down to the individual images. Every sonneteer for the next three centuries is working in his shadow, including Shakespeare, who spends a good deal of his own sequence being rude about the conventions.

Lauree sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1959, with 33 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lauree sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar, so it is never a puzzle to say.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
  • The ending makes it visually distinct from the standard spelling, which is its purpose.
What to consider
  • Laurie and Lori are both far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • The ending cannot be heard, so the spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • It reads as a short form to some people, so formal settings will ask what it stands for.
