The French form loses the a that Latin and English keep. Laura has three letters after the l and Laure has two, because French dropped the final vowel of a great many Latin words and marked what was left with a silent e — which is why so many French names look truncated beside their Italian and Spanish cousins.

Where it comes from

The story of Laure

The shrub most English gardens call a laurel is not the laurel of the crowns and is poisonous. Cherry laurel is a Prunus — related to plums and almonds — and its leaves release cyanide compounds when crushed, which is why entomologists once used them to kill specimens in collecting jars. The bay laurel of the wreaths and the kitchen is a different plant in a different family entirely. Somebody clipping a hedge and somebody garnishing a stew are handling two unrelated species that share one word.

Meaning

the laurel

From the Latin name of the bay tree. The sense is not disputed, though whether the name was given for the plant or for a place named after it is another question.

Laure sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1959, with 102 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Laure sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a genuine French form rather than a respelling.
  • One syllable, five letters, and never needs repeating.
  • The meaning is concrete and pleasant.
What to consider
  • English speakers add a syllable that French does not have.
  • Laura is far commoner and will be substituted.
  • The generation that used it in America is now elderly.
