Latonia
Feminine
Latonia is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 5,104 girls against 16 boys since 1880.
Latonia arrives at a Roman goddess by accident. Latona is what Rome called Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis, and Latonia was used in Latin poetry for her daughter. An American name built from La- and Tonia lands on that spelling without any of it being intended, which is a coincidence worth knowing about.

The story of Latonia
Leto was the mother of the twin gods and the story about her is unusually harsh even by the standards of Greek myth: pursued while pregnant, refused shelter by every land until a floating island took her in, and delivered of Apollo and Artemis on Delos. Rome took her over as Latona. The American name meanwhile belongs to the prefix tradition and was almost certainly built rather than borrowed — which makes the collision with a goddess an accident, and a rather good one.

Not established
Latona is the Roman name for the Greek Leto, and Latonia in Latin verse means her daughter — Diana. That is real and documented. The other road is American: La- is the busiest prefix in the system and Tonia is a standing short form of Antonia, so the name assembles cleanly with no Latin involved. Which applies is a family fact, and the goddess is available rather than established.
Pronouncing Latonia
luh-TOH-nee-uh
luh-TOH-nee-uh, four syllables, stress on the second. Some compress the ending and give it three, luh-TOHN-yuh. The Latin Latonia would have had the weight on the third syllable, which nobody uses.

Fashion outlook
Latonia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Tonia and Toni are both usable short forms and they sit in different registers.
- There is a genuine classical name it lands on, which gives a family something real to point to.
- Four open syllables sit well against a short, blunt surname.
- The syllable count varies between speakers, so the name is said two ways.
- Latonya and Latoya are both close and much better known, so this spelling gets substituted.
- The classical connection is a coincidence rather than a descent, and should be offered that way.
