Where it comes from

The story of Latishia

Laetitia was a Latin word for gladness and, in Roman times, a personified virtue. English simplified the Latin ae to a plain e — the same change that turned encyclopedia into encyclopedia — so the name arrived as Letitia; the first A of Latishia happens to land back on the Latin's first vowel, though it came there by way of American sound rather than Latin. Letitia Christian Tyler, wife of President John Tyler, had suffered a stroke before he took office and made one public appearance as First Lady, at her daughter's White House wedding; she died there in September 1842, the first presidential wife to do so. American families of the later twentieth century took up the name in a spread of spellings, Latisha, Leticia and Latishia among them.

Fashion outlook

Latishia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning, 'joy', that is easy to explain.
  • Belongs to a name with forms in Spanish, Italian, French and English.
  • Comes with established short forms, Tish and Tisha.
What to consider
  • Latisha and Leticia are the spellings people expect, so it will need spelling out.
  • The -shia ending is rare even among the variants; expect it to be 'corrected' on forms.
  • It is closely tied to its era, which reads as warmly familiar to some and dated to others.
