The story of Latisha
Letitia was a Roman name and later an English one, common enough in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to produce the pet form Letty. From the late 1960s, Black American families coined names using a consistent set of prefixes, and Letitia's second half supplied a familiar and attractive stem. Latisha rose through the 1970s and peaked in the early 1980s, alongside Latoya, Latasha and Latonya.
Meaningscholars disagree
joy, gladness
Read through Letitia, the meaning is the Latin laetitia, 'joy' or 'gladness' — an ordinary noun used as a name. The La- prefix carries no meaning of its own; it is a naming marker. Where the name was built purely on sound rather than on Letitia, no meaning applies.

Fashion outlook
Latisha has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off
- The stem carries a transparent and unambiguously happy Latin meaning.
- Three syllables with a strong middle, a rhythm that carries well when spoken.
- Tisha and Tish are both available as short forms.
- Several spellings are in use, so the written form has to be given.
- The internal capital is a genuine choice between two established spellings.
- The name is closely associated with the 1980s.
