Where it comes from

The story of Latina

Latium was a plain south of Rome, and the Latins were one tribe on it among several. The language they spoke had no particular status: Etruscan was more prestigious, Greek was the language of learning, and Oscan and Umbrian were spoken by more people across the peninsula. What made Latin the language of an empire was that one city on that plain won a series of wars it might easily have lost. The word therefore names a small district that happened to produce a large outcome, and every use of it since — the language, the alphabet, the church's liturgy, and the modern American term — traces back to a piece of farmland about the size of a county.

Meaning

Fashion outlook

Latina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Tina sits inside it as a completely established short form.
  • The rhythm is even and the spelling follows the sound exactly.
  • The word behind it is genuinely ancient rather than invented.
What to consider
  • The name is now identical to a widely used descriptor, which will be read into it.
  • It reads as a statement about identity whether or not one was intended.
  • It is closely tied to the decades of its American use.
