The story of Latanya
Tatiana is the heroine of Eugene Onegin, and Tolstoy gave the name to a daughter of the Rostov family in War and Peace; between them, Russian literature made Tanya familiar to English readers across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It entered American use as a name in its own right well before anyone here was reading much Russian. Once it was established, the American prefix system attached to it, and Latanya, Datanya and Shatanya all appear in the record — the system working on an imported name rather than on an invented syllable, which is how most of its material arrives.

Not established
Tanya shortens Tatiana, which comes from the Roman family name Tatius — and what Tatius meant is not recoverable, since it is Sabine rather than Latin and Sabine barely survives. So the second half of this name has a documented line and an empty destination. The La- prefix contributes no meaning of its own. The result is a name whose ancestry is traceable and whose meaning is not, which is a more common situation than most naming books admit.

Fashion outlook
Latanya sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Tanya is waiting inside it as a short form recognized across Europe and America alike.
- Three syllables with a clear middle stress, which balances a short surname.
- Every letter behaves as an English reader expects, so it is said right on first sight.
- LaTanya, La Tanya and Latanya are all in use, and the capital in the middle is a standing question.
- The syllable count varies between speakers, so the name is said two ways.
- The prefix places the name in a specific American tradition and period, which is legible to many readers.
