Where it comes from

The story of Lasonya

The Russian short form contains a consonant the full name does not. Sofia has an f and no n anywhere in it; Sonya has an n and no f — the diminutive was built by taking the first syllable and attaching an ending, and the ending brought a letter with it that had never been in the name. English shortenings usually subtract. Russian ones frequently rebuild, which is why Alexander gives Sasha and Maria gives Masha, and why a Russian pet name so often looks like a different name to somebody reading it cold.

Meaningscholars disagree

wisdom, at one remove

The Greek word for wisdom stands behind the Russian name, and a diminutive plus a prefix stand between. The prefix contributes nothing translatable, so the sense arrives thin.

Fashion outlook

Lasonya sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sonya sits inside it as a complete and independent name.
  • The rhythm is even and the name is easy to say at speed.
  • It reaches a genuinely old Greek word through a real Russian name.
What to consider
  • Lasonia and Lasonja both appear and the spelling gets queried.
  • The prefix dates the name firmly to the decades of its use.
  • The meaning arrives at two removes and thins on the way.
