Lashanna is built from two pieces that both attach freely to almost anything, which is why the record holds it and cannot explain it. The shape it ends on, though, is shared with a word that reached English from a language almost nobody now speaks.

Where it comes from

Our story of Lashanna

The Taino were the people Columbus met first, and within a century of that meeting they had very largely ceased to exist as a people. Their language went with them, almost. What survived is a short list of words that Spanish borrowed on the spot and English took second-hand, and the list is remarkable for how ordinary it now sounds: hurricane, canoe, hammock, barbecue, tobacco, maize, and savanna, the open grassland. Every one of those is a Taino word doing daily work in English five hundred years later. Lashanna does not come from any of them. But a name assembled out of free-floating pieces is a reminder of how languages actually build, and the Taino words are the best possible evidence that the pieces outlast almost everything else.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source has been documented. The front is a prefix that American naming used with a great many bases, and the back could be Shanna, Shauna or nothing at all. Names built this way often had no single parent even when they were chosen.

Pronouncing Lashanna

luh-SHAN-uh

Three syllables with the weight in the middle and a short a in the middle syllable. The doubled n is what keeps that vowel short rather than turning it into the a of Shauna.

Lashanna sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1977, with 67 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lashanna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Shanna comes off the back of it as a short form and stands perfectly well on its own.
  • The stress is unmistakable, so most people say it correctly on a first reading.
  • It is long enough to be distinctive and simple enough to spell after hearing it twice.
What to consider
  • Lashawna, Lashona and LaShanna are all in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you often.
  • No origin is documented, which means the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
  • It belongs audibly to one stretch of American naming, which places it in time for listeners of a certain age.
