Lasha is an American coinage and, entirely separately, a Georgian man's name carried by a king. Lasha-Giorgi ruled Georgia at the height of its medieval power, the son of the queen who was styled king because Georgian had no word for a reigning woman, and his nickname is thought to mean light or enlightener in an old language of the Caucasus.

The story of Lasha
The Georgian king inherited a country at its largest and left it about to be destroyed. His mother had ruled for nearly thirty years and was called king in the chronicles because the language had no other word for the office; he succeeded her, campaigned successfully, quarreled with the church about his private life, and died young. Within a few years of his death the Mongols arrived and the golden age was over. His nickname, which is the name in question, is not Georgian at all — it comes from one of the mountain languages of the north Caucasus, and the chroniclers gloss it as meaning light.

Not established
In American use the name is built from a productive front element and a common ending, and neither carries a meaning. The Georgian name is unrelated and reached the same four letters independently, which happens constantly with short names. It is mentioned here because a family looking the name up will find the Georgian entry and may reasonably conclude that it explains something, and it does not.

- a Caucasian word for light gives a Georgian royal nickname
- an American front element and ending combine independently
