Where it comes from

The story of Laquetta

The rule about u after q is a Latin inheritance that English kept long after it stopped making sense. Latin used qu for a genuine k-plus-w sound; English borrowed the habit and applied it even to words where the w had disappeared, which is why we write quiche and antique. Old English had managed perfectly well with cw — the word queen was spelled cwen — and Norman scribes replaced it. So every q in the language is the result of a spelling reform carried out by French-speaking clerks in the twelfth century, and it has held ever since.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name is assembled from a productive American front element and an ending borrowed from French and Italian, with a consonant in the middle chosen for sound. Neither part carries a meaning. The letter q is doing something worth noticing: it is a purely visual choice, since the sound could equally have been written with a k or a c, and the family that chose it was reaching for a letter that looks unusual on a page.

How the name formed

  1. Latin qu inherited through Norman scribes
  2. Old English cw replaced across the whole vocabulary
  3. American naming borrows a French ending
  4. Laquetta appears in the record in the 1930s
  5. peaks around 1940 and again much later

Fashion outlook

Laquetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at sight by anybody who tries.
  • The q gives it a distinctive look that very few names have.
  • The rhythm is the three-beat one English handles most comfortably.
What to consider
  • The qu invites the English kw sound from readers who have not met the name.
  • There is no meaning to give her and no origin beyond the pattern.
  • It is closely dated to the middle decades of the last century.
