Laquanda
Feminine
Laquanda is assembled from three American pieces, and the middle one invites a comparison that does not hold. Quanah Parker was the last chief of the Comanche and his name is genuinely Comanche, with a documented meaning. The resemblance to the middle of this name is a coincidence of sound, and it is worth saying so plainly, because the assumption is common and the correction is not.

From A prefix in wide American use to Laquanda
Our story of Laquanda
Quanah Parker's name is Comanche and means something like fragrance or smell, and he was the son of a Comanche chief and a white woman taken as a child in a raid. He led the last free band on the southern plains, surrendered on his own terms, and spent the rest of his life as a rancher, a lobbyist and a leader of a new religious movement, which is one of the odder second acts in American history. The resemblance between his name and the middle of this one is entirely accidental. American naming built a stock of syllables that could be recombined, and one of them happened to land near a real word in a real language, as such syllables occasionally do. Naming a real source would be more satisfying than saying so, and it would also be false.
Meaningnot established
Not established
None of the three elements carries meaning. The prefix is a piece of American rhythm, the middle is a syllable that came loose from other coined names, and the ending is a feminine marker. No African, Native American or European language supplies a source, and the reference works that print one are supplying it rather than reporting it.
How the name formed
- A prefix in wide American use
- A middle syllable detached from other coinages
- A feminine ending fixed on the back
- Laquanda and Lakwanda in the registers together
Pronouncing Laquanda
luh-KWAN-duh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The qu is doing the ordinary English job of spelling a k followed by a w sound, which is the only job that letter pair has ever had in this language.

Fashion outlook
Laquanda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is transparent and nobody will need it repeated.
- Quanda works as a short form and is not shared with a crowd.
- The q gives it a distinctive shape on the page, which very few names have.
- There is no meaning to give, and the plausible-looking one belongs to a different language.
- It will be spelled Lakwanda or Laquandra by people writing it from speech.
- It is firmly of one stretch of American naming.
