Where it comes from

Our story of Laquana

A quay is a stone landing place for ships, said key, spelled from French. A cay is a low sandy island in the Caribbean, also said key, borrowed from Spanish, which had taken it from an Arawakan language. The two words have nothing to do with each other and English has been confusing them for four hundred years, which is why the Florida Keys are spelled one way and said the other, and why older maps use all three spellings interchangeably. It is a good example of what English does when two borrowings arrive at the same sound: it keeps both, spells them inconsistently, and leaves the untangling to the dictionary.

Laquana sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 49 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Laquana sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Quana and Ana are both available as short forms without any work.
  • The stress falls where an English reader expects, so first attempts land correctly.
  • Three open syllables carry well and are easy to hear across a room.
What to consider
  • Laquanna, Lakwana and Lequana are all in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
  • It belongs audibly to one stretch of American naming, which places it in time for some listeners.
