Laney
Feminine · Greek roots
Laney is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 14,024 girls against 336 boys since 1880.
Laney has been turning up in American birth records since the nineteenth century, which is a longer run than most names that look like nicknames. It arrives by two roads: as a pet form of Elaine — the Arthurian name Tennyson put back into circulation — and as a clipping of the Irish surname Delaney. Two syllables, both open, easy to call across a yard.

The story of Laney
The oldest road runs through Elaine, which came into English from Old French as the name of a lady in the Arthurian romances and was revived when Tennyson published Idylls of the King in the nineteenth century. English speakers have clipped Elaine to Lainey and Laney for generations, and the short form began appearing on its own in American records not long after that revival. A second road opened later: Delaney, an Irish surname turned girl's name in the United States, shortened the same way. A third, quieter one comes from the surname Lane. All three land on the same two syllables, which is why the name feels older and more settled than a four-letter nickname has any right to.
Meaningscholars disagree
Depends on the longer name behind it: 'bright, shining' by the Elaine route, 'descendant of Dubhshláine' by the Delaney route
Laney has no meaning of its own; it inherits one. Through Elaine it goes back to Greek Helenē, whose own root has never been settled — the connection to a word for torch or brightness is the usual reading, not a proven one. Through Delaney it goes back to the Irish surname Ó Dubhshláine, built on dubh, 'black', and Sláine. And for some families it is simply the surname Lane with a friendly ending, in which case it means a narrow road.

The Johnie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Laney's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Johnie climbed just as high around 1907, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Johnie's path sketches the road Laney is walking now.
Laney sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Short, phonetic and instantly sayable — most people read it correctly on the first try.
- Works either as a full given name or as the everyday form of Elaine, Delaney, Alaina or Melanie, which leaves options open later.
- A documented presence on American birth records stretching back to the nineteenth century, not a recent invention.
- Familiar to English speakers without being attached to any single decade of fashion.
- Laney and Lainey are close enough that she will spend her life correcting one to the other, and Laine and Lany turn up too. Choosing the spelling knowingly helps; expecting it never to be questioned does not.
- Because it reads as a short form, some people will assume there is a longer official name and ask for it. That is easy to answer, but it comes up — on forms, at introductions, from relatives.
- It sits in a crowded sound family with Lacey, Lainey, Layla and Delaney, so in a room where those names are around, hers may need repeating once.
