Where it comes from

The story of Landa

Landa is Basque for a field, and the related French word lande means open heath; it gave its name to the Landes, the sandy, marshy country of southwest France. From the late eighteenth century engineers planted grasses and pines to stop the coastal dunes from marching inland, and in the nineteenth century the whole region was drained and sown with maritime pine, creating one of the largest planted forests in Europe. In the United States Landa also appears as a girl's name in the years when Linda was one of the commonest names in the country, and nothing records whether those families were thinking of the word, the surname, or simply a different vowel.

Meaningscholars disagree

Basque 'field', or a variant of Linda

Landa is a Basque word for a field or meadow and a Spanish and Basque surname. The American girls' name of the mid-century may instead be Linda with another vowel; the record does not say which.

Fashion outlook

Landa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short and easy to say.
  • Carries a real word from Basque with a long history.
  • Rare, so a Landa is unlikely to share her name.
What to consider
  • People will hear Linda or Lana and write it that way.
  • Its meaning depends on which road a family took, so the answer has two parts.
