Lanai has two Hawaiian meanings and one of them is a house feature. Lānaʻi with a glottal stop is the island; lānai without it is the roofed porch or veranda, a word that entered general American English through Hawaii and is now printed in real-estate listings across the mainland. The name sits on both, and the spelling cannot tell them apart.

Where it comes from

The story of Lanai

Hawaiian place names entered American given-name use through tourism as much as through Hawaiian families — Kailua, Kona, Maui and Lanai all appear in mainland records, often given by families with no Hawaiian connection. That is a genuinely different route from the way Hawaiian personal names such as Keanu or Leilani travel, and it means the American name has a mainland history separate from anything in Hawaii. The 2011 peak is small and mainland-driven. The porch sense, meanwhile, is a loanword that has been in general English for over a century, which makes it the meaning most American listeners will actually reach for.

Meaningscholars disagree

Hawaiian: either the island of Lānaʻi or lānai, "porch, veranda"

The two words are distinguished in Hawaiian by the ʻokina, the glottal stop, which English spelling drops. Lānaʻi the island has been read as "day of conquest", though that etymology is uncertain. Lānai the veranda is a settled everyday word. Since American spelling collapses the two, the name inherits both and neither can be asserted as the intended one.

Pronouncing Lanai

luh-NYE

The porch word is usually luh-NYE in mainland American English, two syllables. Hawaiian gives three for the island — laa-NAH-ee — with the glottal stop between the last two. The two-syllable mainland reading is what most listeners will produce.

Lanai sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 26 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lanai went to 16 girls in 2025, but Lanay is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 21, which makes it the 939th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,899 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 76,537 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Lanai itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, ends on a strong open sound, and is easy to say once heard.
  • Lana is available as a familiar short form with its own long history.
  • The Hawaiian connection is genuine rather than constructed.
What to consider
  • The most common American association is a porch, not an island.
  • Place names given outside their culture raise questions some families would rather avoid.
  • The number of syllables is genuinely unsettled between the Hawaiian and mainland readings.
