Where it comes from

Our story of Lakiya

Lac is a resin secreted by a scale insect on trees in India and Southeast Asia, and it has been harvested for thousands of years for varnish and for a red dye. The Sanskrit word is laksha, and it went west through Persian and Portuguese into English as lac, lacquer and shellac — shellac being the resin in flake form. The same Sanskrit word means one hundred thousand, and that is not a coincidence: the number seems to come from the sheer quantity of insects involved in producing any usable amount. It survives in Indian English as lakh, which is still the standard unit in which Indian newspapers report money. So a word for a swarm produced both a varnish and a number, and English took one while India kept both.

Fashion outlook

Lakiya sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Kiya detaches cleanly and is a complete name.
  • The spelling is phonetic and can be written from hearing.
What to consider
  • Lakia, Lakeya and Lakiyah are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The name is firmly dated to the decades it was made in.
  • Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
