An American prefix has been fastened to a Spanish name and the result belongs to neither language. Juana is entirely ordinary in Spanish; the La- on the front is an English-language element with no meaning, and no Spanish speaker would produce the combination.

Where it comes from

The story of Lajuana

The most consequential woman to carry the stem name was locked away for most of her life. She was queen of Castile in her own right, inherited a second kingdom, and was declared unfit to rule by her father, then her husband, then her son in turn — each of whom governed in her name while keeping her confined in a convent town for forty-six years. Whether she was actually mad, or grieving, or simply inconvenient to three men who each wanted her throne, has been argued ever since. The nickname she is remembered by was applied by the people who benefited from it.

God is gracious, at one remove

The Spanish stem is the feminine of John and its sense passes through. The prefix contributes nothing, and whether the family that built it knew the stem was Spanish is not recoverable.

Fashion outlook

Lajuana sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Juana sits inside it as a complete and widely recognized name.
  • The rhythm is even and the spelling follows the sound.
  • It joins two traditions rather than sitting entirely inside one.
What to consider
  • It belongs to neither language cleanly and will puzzle speakers of both.
  • The prefix carries no meaning and no page can honestly supply one.
  • It is closely tied to the middle decades of the last century.
