The La- of Laisha is not the La- of Lashawn. In Spanish-speaking naming the syllable is the actual definite article, a live word in the language the family speaks, which makes it a different thing from the free prefix of American coinage even when the letters are identical.

Where it comes from

Our story of Laisha

The same two letters can be doing quite different work in two naming systems. In African American naming the La- prefix arrived from Louisiana French surnames and detached long ago; it is a free element with no grammar behind it, and a speaker attaching it is not saying the. In Mexican and Central American naming, la is the ordinary Spanish definite article, used a hundred times a day, and a name beginning with it is heard as containing a word. That difference does not show on a page and does show in how the name is understood in the household. Laisha is Mexican-American in its distribution, and its best year in United States records is 2004.

Not established

No settled etymology. The name may be built from the Spanish article la and a syllable, or from Aisha, the Arabic name of the Prophet's wife, meaning living or she who lives, with an added la. Hebrew ishah, a woman, is also offered. None is documented, and the name's Mexican-American record does not decide between them.

Pronouncing Laisha

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Laisha went to 16 girls in 2025, but Laysha is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 25, which makes it the 935th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,903 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 64,291 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Laisha itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three open syllables and no clusters, so it is easy to say.
  • Isha is available as a short form with its own history.
  • Reads correctly in Spanish, which most coinages do not.
What to consider
  • Laysha and Laisha both circulate and split the records.
  • English speakers will collapse it from three syllables to two.
  • The name has no documented meaning to pass on.
