Where it comes from

Our story of Lafonda

The Spanish word for a modest inn came into Spanish from Arabic funduq, which named an inn with a warehouse attached — the standard arrangement for merchants traveling with goods. Arabic had itself taken it from Greek pandokheion, which means, literally, a place that receives everybody. The same word went into Italian as fondaco, where it named the great merchant warehouses of Venice: the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, the German traders' house on the Grand Canal, is one of them and is now a department store. So a Greek compound about accepting all comers became an Arabic caravanserai, then a Venetian customs house, then a small Spanish hotel — and in the American southwest it is the word on the sign of a great many of them.

Not established

As a Spanish phrase it means the inn; as an American build it is a free prefix on a free base and means nothing. The record contains names of both kinds from the same decades, and nothing distinguishes which a given family had in mind.

Pronouncing Lafonda

luh-FON-duh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Spanish would put the weight in the same place, which is one of the reasons the phrase reading is plausible.

Fashion outlook

Lafonda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Fonda detaches cleanly and is recognizable in its own right.
  • It is uncommon while being entirely readable on sight.
What to consider
  • Spanish speakers will read two ordinary words and may say so.
  • Lafonda, La Fonda and Lafonde are all recorded and the spelling will need giving.
  • Which of the two possible origins applies is not recorded.
