Where it comes from

Our story of Lacretia

Two things worth knowing are attached to the Roman name, and a child carrying this one is entitled to both. The first is a book: a Lucretius wrote a long poem arguing that the world is made of particles falling through emptiness, that the gods do not interfere, and that death is nothing to fear — and the poem vanished for a thousand years until a book-hunter found a copy in a German monastery and had it recopied. It changed European thought when it came back. The second is an American: Lucretia Mott, a Quaker minister who was refused a seat at an international antislavery convention because she was a woman, and who went home, kept preaching, and helped organize the meeting at Seneca Falls that began the campaign for women's votes.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Lucretia, the name underneath, is a Roman family name, and Roman family names usually cannot be translated — they are older than the explanations offered for them. The connection between this spelling and that name is one of sound and shape rather than of descent, so no meaning passes down to it. The front syllable carries none of its own.

Lacretia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1975, with 43 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Lacretia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is rare while sounding entirely familiar, which is a hard combination to arrange.
  • The back of the name connects to a genuinely ancient one, which is something to tell.
  • It shortens cleanly in two different directions.
What to consider
  • Lucretia, Lacresha and Lakeisha are all near neighbors and the spelling will be guessed.
  • The ti-said-as-sh will trip anyone reading it for the first time.
  • No meaning descends to it, and the Roman name it resembles cannot be translated either.
