Where it comes from

Our story of Kion

Our story of Kion is a story of a Persian dynasty and an American ending. The Kayanians are a legendary line of kings in the Shahnameh, and Kian means of that line — royal. American naming meanwhile built Keon, Kion and Deion on Ke- fronts through the 1980s. Kion appears in the registers in that period, and which route a family took is not recorded. The Persian is real; the descent is not documented.

Meaningscholars disagree

of the kings

May reflect the Persian Kian, from kayanian, the legendary dynasty of the Shahnameh, generally read as 'kings' or 'royal'. Or be a modern American coinage on the Ke- front. Neither is established for this spelling. The Persian is documented.

Kion sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2017, with 128 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kion went to 50 boys in 2025, but Kyon, Kiyon and Kyion are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 103, which makes it the 825th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,779 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 16,583 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 34,162 for Kion itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
