Where it comes from

The story of Kevon

Kevin of Glendalough was a sixth-century hermit who founded a monastery in a valley in Wicklow, and the stories about him are largely about stillness — the one where a blackbird nests in his outstretched hand is the best known. He is a patron saint of Dublin. The name spread from Ireland into general English use in the twentieth century and became very common. Kevon belongs to the respellings that follow, and it has been most at home in African-American and Caribbean families.

Meaning

gentle birth; beloved one

Irish Caoimhin joins caomh, 'gentle, kind, beloved', to a diminutive ending, and it is often glossed 'of gentle birth' or 'handsome birth'. The reading is documented. Kevon is a modern American respelling of Kevin with an -on ending in place of the -in, and it carries the same meaning by inheritance rather than by its own construction.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kev is a ready short form shared with a very well-established name.
  • A documented Irish origin with a genuinely gentle meaning behind it.
  • Two syllables that every English speaker says correctly at first sight.
What to consider
  • Kevin is far more common and this name will be corrected to it in writing.
  • The two stress patterns both circulate, so the child will be correcting people.
  • Kevon, Kevonn and Kevaughn are all in use and none is standard.
