Kenny
Masculine · “born of fire”
Kenny is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 51,931 boys against 548 girls since 1880. See Kenny as a girl name
Kenneth is two Gaelic names that English could not tell apart. Cináed and Coinneach are different words with different meanings — one about fire, one about being handsome — and English speakers, hearing them both, wrote Kenneth for each. The first king of the Scots was the first kind; most modern Kenneths descend from the second. Kenny is the everyday form of the merger.

The story of Kenny
Cináed mac Ailpín united the Picts and the Scots, or was later credited with it, and his name became a royal one in Scotland. Coinneach was the ordinary Highland name, and Coinneach is the one that gave Scotland most of its Kenneths. English scribes flattened both into one spelling, and the merged name spread through Britain and to America. Kenny appears in American records from the 1900s and peaked around 1960, given as a full name rather than a nickname for a great many of the men who carry it.

born of fire, or handsome
Two separate Gaelic names lie under Kenneth. Cináed is usually read as born of fire, and it belonged to the ninth-century king Cináed mac Ailpín, traditionally counted the first king of the Scots. Coinneach means handsome or comely and is a quite different word. English anglicized both as Kenneth, and after several centuries there is no telling which a family carries.

The Merle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kenny's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Merle climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Merle's path sketches the road Kenny is walking now.
Kenny sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is warm and informal without being childish, which few short forms manage.
- Ken and Kenneth are both available, so a man is never stuck with a diminutive.
- Two Gaelic names with genuinely different meanings stand behind it, and both are worth telling.
- Nobody has ever had to spell it twice.
- It belongs strongly to one American generation and places a man's age immediately.
- As a given name it reads as a nickname, and the question about what it is short for arrives regularly.
- Nearly every child given this spelling is a boy; the record's girls are very few.
Nobody names a baby alone.
