Where it comes from

The story of Katalyna

Aikaterine belonged to a fourth-century martyr of Alexandria whose cult spread across Christendom. Spain made Catalina of it, and a Californian island and a mountain range in Arizona both carry the name from Spanish missions. Katalyna is a modern American respelling that swaps the C for a K and the i for a y, changing the look while keeping every sound.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Greek Aikaterine is of unknown origin. The connection to katharos, pure, is a later Christian reinterpretation that changed the spelling; what the name meant before is not recoverable. Catalina carries the same uncertainty.

Katalyna sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2023, with 57 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

#89
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Katalyna went to 42 girls in 2025, but Catalina, Katalina and Catalyna are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 3,241, which makes it the 89th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,488 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 496 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 38,268 for Katalyna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One of the longest continuous records any European name can show stands behind it.
  • Kata, Lina and Kat are all usable short forms.
  • Every letter is sounded, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
What to consider
  • Catalina is the standard spelling and will be written for her constantly.
  • Nine letters and four syllables is a great deal for early handwriting.
  • The meaning is genuinely unknown despite the name's age and fame.
