Kassandra is the older Greek spelling of a name Homer already knew: Kassandra, daughter of Priam, appears in the Iliad, and Aeschylus gave her the great prophecy scene of his Agamemnon in the fifth century BC. The K is not a modern flourish but the Greek kappa restored, the letter Latin scribes swapped for a C on the way west. Nearly three thousand years later the four beats of it still fall the same way in the mouth.

Where it comes from

The story of Kassandra

The name belongs first to Greek epic: Kassandra, a princess of Troy, who in the Iliad is one of Priam's daughters and in later tragedy is the prophetess whose warnings no one heeds. Latin writers wrote her Cassandra, and that C-spelling is the form that reached medieval England, where it was in ordinary use as a woman's name for centuries. The K-form traveled a different route into modern use — through Greek itself, through German and Polish, and through Spanish-speaking families in the Americas, which is part of why it sits strongest in California, Texas and Florida. English-language use of Kassandra took hold in the middle of the twentieth century and has held a steady place ever since.

Meaningscholars disagree

probably from Greek roots for "to excel, shine" and "man"

The most widely repeated reading breaks it into Greek kekasmai, "to excel or shine", plus anēr, "man" — hence glosses like "shining over men" or "she who excels men". Other scholars treat it as pre-Greek, a name inherited from an older Aegean language and therefore not translatable at all. Both readings are taken seriously, and neither has won.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kassandra went to 197 girls in 2025, but Cassandra is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 660, which makes it the 429th most-given girls’ name of the year — 744 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,435 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 8,159 for Kassandra itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The root name has an unbroken record from Greek epic through medieval England to today, so it is familiar to almost everyone who hears it.
  • Established short forms already in use: Kassie, Kass, Sandra, Sandy.
  • Recognizable in Greek, French, Spanish, Italian, German and Polish with only small changes to spelling.
  • Pronunciation is never in doubt, even for people meeting the K-spelling for the first time.
  • Strongest in California, Texas and Florida, and equally at home in English and Spanish.
What to consider
  • The default spelling in English is Cassandra with a C. Expect to spell it aloud fairly often, and expect forms and emails to come back with the C.
  • The mythological Kassandra is the prophetess no one believes — an association strong enough that "Cassandra" is used in English for anyone whose warnings are ignored. Some people find that a rich inheritance; others would rather not hand it over.
  • The name is much better represented among adults than in current kindergarten classes, so a child is likely to be the only one in her year while meeting grown women who share it.
