Kane
Masculine · “From the Irish surname Ó Catháin”
Kane is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 19,521 boys against 36 girls since 1880.
Kane began as a surname in Ireland — the anglicized form of Ó Catháin, a family line whose name goes back to the Irish word for battle. Somewhere along the way it stepped out of the surname column and became a first name in its own right, one syllable, spelled the way it sounds. It arrives in the mouth in a single beat and leaves nothing behind to explain.

The story of Kane
The Ó Catháin family belonged to the north of Ireland, and like thousands of Gaelic surnames theirs was flattened into English spelling under English administration — Ó Catháin becoming Kane, Keane, Kean, O'Kane. Irish emigration carried all those spellings to Britain, Australia and the United States, where the shortest and plainest of them traveled best. The move from surname to given name is the modern chapter: Kane appears in American birth records only in the second half of the twentieth century, part of the long fashion for one-syllable surnames used as first names. Its strongest showing today is in the big western and southern states.

From the Irish surname Ó Catháin, ultimately from cath, "battle"
The main line runs through Irish: Ó Catháin, "descendant of Cathán", with Cathán a diminutive of cath, "battle". A separate strand connects the spelling to the Welsh name Cain, from cain, "fair, beautiful". Kane is also a Japanese surname of unrelated origin, and the sound coincides with the biblical Cain, which comes from Hebrew and has nothing to do with either.

The Brendon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kane's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Brendon climbed just as high around 1998, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Brendon's path sketches the road Kane is walking now.
Kane sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable, four letters, and pronounceable on sight by anyone who reads English — rarely misheard when spoken.
- Documented for centuries as an Irish surname before it was ever a first name, so it has a long paper trail behind it.
- Sits comfortably beside multi-syllable surnames and long middle names, which short first names often do well.
- Recognized in Ireland, Britain and Australia as well as the United States, thanks to the surname's spread.
- It sounds identical to Cain, the brother-killer of Genesis, and to the word cane. Most people never make the connection out loud, but some will, and the spelling is what keeps the distance.
- Because the name's wave is very recent, most Kanes in the country are children or young adults. A boy named Kane is unlikely to meet an older one.
- There is almost nothing to shorten. If nicknames matter to your family, the middle name will have to carry that job.
- One-syllable first name plus one-syllable surname can land clipped; try the full name aloud before deciding.
