The story of Kalliope
Calliope is the eldest of the nine Muses and presides over epic poetry; both the Iliad and the Aeneid open by invoking a Muse, and she is the one meant. Hesiod calls her the chief of them. The steam calliope was patented in 1855. The name appears in American records rising and is in current use.
Meaning
beautiful-voiced
From the Greek kallos, 'beauty', and ops, 'voice' — so 'beautiful-voiced'. Both elements are ordinary Greek and the compound is transparent and undisputed. The steam organ is named for her, which is why the word also means a very loud instrument.
