Kalani is Hawaiian, built the way many Hawaiian names are built: the article ka joined to lani, the word for sky and heaven. It is one of a family of names — Lani, Leilani — that share that same syllable, and it moves easily in the mouth, every consonant followed by a vowel. Long established in Hawaiʻi, it reached the mainland charts much later, and its wave there is recent.
How old is the name Kalani?

The story of Kalani
Kalani comes straight out of Hawaiian, where lani — sky, heaven — is one of the most productive elements in the language of names, and ka is simply the definite article in front of it. In Hawaiian usage it belongs to men and women alike, as most Hawaiian names do; the language does not mark gender, and the same name is given to a son or a daughter without alteration. US records show it settling in as a girl's name on the mainland, arriving on the charts in the mid-twentieth century and building slowly rather than bursting. The word itself is far older than any of that: lani traces back through Polynesian to the cognates found in Samoan lagi and Māori rangi.
Meaning
the heavens, the sky; by extension, royal or chiefly
Hawaiian ka ("the") plus lani ("sky, heaven"). Because chiefs were spoken of in the language of the heavens, lani also carries the sense of high-born or royal, and the element appears throughout the names of Hawaiian aliʻi.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Consuelo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kalani's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Consuelo climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Consuelo's path sketches the road Kalani is walking now.
Kalani sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is transparent and easy to explain in a sentence — ka, "the," plus lani, "sky, heaven."
- Spelled the way it sounds in Hawaiian, with no silent letters and no competing standard spelling.
- Comes with ready-made short forms, Lani and Kala, both of which stand on their own as names.
- Genderless in Hawaiian, so it works without adjustment for a son or a daughter.
- Part of a recognizable family of names — Lani, Leilani — that most Americans have already heard.
- Hawaiian names carry real cultural weight in Hawaiʻi, where lani names have deep genealogical associations. Families with no Hawaiian connection are sometimes asked about it, and it is worth being ready to answer plainly.
- Because it is genderless in Hawaiian and recorded mostly for girls on the mainland, a Kalani may occasionally be assumed to be a boy — on forms, in rosters, before anyone has met them.
- Expect some drift toward kuh-LAN-ee, and expect it to be mixed up with Kailani, Kalina and Leilani in writing.
- It has been in American records for decades but the children carrying it are overwhelmingly young, so it may read as a new name to people who do not know its Hawaiian history.
