Justis takes an English abstract noun and gives it a Latin-looking ending, which returns it almost exactly to where it started. The Roman name and the English word are the same word at different removes: one is the Latin adjective used as a personal name, the other is the Latin noun built from the same root and borrowed into English through French a thousand years later.

The story of Justis
The Latin adjective produced a name and a noun independently. As a name it was in Roman use, appears in the New Testament attached to two or three different men, and became a saint's name and then an ordinary given name in several European languages. As a noun it went into French, was borrowed into English after the conquest as a legal term, and became the abstract virtue. English then reimported the virtue as a name in the twentieth century, along with a whole set of others, without any awareness that a personal name from the same root had been in continuous use elsewhere the entire time. This spelling closes the circle: an English word-name with an ending that makes it look like the Latin name it did not descend from.
Meaning
just, fair
From the Latin adjective meaning upright or lawful, which was in use as a Roman personal name and appears in the New Testament. The English abstract noun comes from the same root. So the name means what the word means, and the respelled ending has taken it back toward the Latin form it came from, probably by accident.
How the name formed
- A Latin adjective meaning upright
- Justus as a Roman and early Christian name
- The abstract noun borrowed into English separately
- Justis, taking the word back toward the Latin form

Fashion outlook
Justis sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Nobody will mispronounce it, and the meaning needs no explaining.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
- The spelling puts a useful distance between the name and the noun.
- The word is a large abstract virtue for a child to carry around.
- Justice is the commoner spelling and this one will be corrected into it.
- It reads as a surname to some people, which it never was.
Nobody names a baby alone.
