The story of Junie
The Latin month Iunius gave English June, and the -ie ending that English speakers attach to everything did the rest. Junia was already a Roman name, carried into the New Testament in Paul's greeting in Romans; Racine borrowed the French form Junie for the heroine of his tragedy Britannicus in 1669. In the United States, Junie arrived on the charts alongside a wave of month and flower names and stayed there, quietly, through every shift in fashion since. Most American readers under forty first met it in Barbara Park's Junie B. Jones chapter books, which have kept the name in circulation among children who never knew a grown-up who had it.
Meaning
A pet form of June, from the Latin month Iunius
June comes from Iunius, the Roman month traditionally tied to the goddess Juno. Junie has also been used as a short form of Junia, the name Paul greets in Romans 16, and more recently of Juniper. In some American families it served as the spoken form of Junior, which is why an occasional male Junie turns up in the record.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on sight for English speakers — no spelling contest, no pronunciation guide needed at the doctor's office.
- Comes with a longer relative already attached: June or Junia can go on the birth certificate if a formal version is wanted.
- A long American track record rather than a recent coinage, so it is recognizable without being familiar from the playground.
- Recognizable to a whole generation of American children through the Junie B. Jones books, which means people have heard it even if they have never met one.
- The -ie ending reads as a nickname, so expect the question 'Is it short for something?' You can answer yes or no; both are true of this name historically.
- The Junie B. Jones books are a strong association for anyone who was a child in the US in the past thirty years — a loud, funny six-year-old in a chapter book. Some parents love that; others would rather the name arrived clean.
- Over the phone it gets heard as Julie or Judy about as often as it lands correctly. Not a crisis, just a small lifelong correction.
- It has been a rare name for a long time, and it still leans older in the living population. A child named Junie will likely be the only one she meets for years.
