The story of Jullian
Julianus was a Roman name long before it was a Christian one, and the most famous man to carry it spent his short reign trying to reverse the empire's direction: Julian, raised Christian, took the throne, declared for the old gods, reopened the temples, and died on campaign in Persia before he was much past thirty. The Church has called him the Apostate ever since. Medieval England took the name and made a feminine from it that almost nobody recognizes today as related — Gillian, with a soft opening, which the modern spelling Jillian now hides completely. So the boys' Julian and the girls' Jillian are one name, separated by the way Norman clerks wrote a Latin J.

Belonging to Julius, the Roman family name
Julian is the adjective form of Julius, so the name means, plainly, of the Julian family. What Julius itself meant is a different question. The family claimed descent from Iulus, son of Aeneas, and Roman writers repeated it, but that is a lineage story rather than an etymology, and the older sense of the name has not been recovered. A reading of downy-bearded, sometimes offered, is a late guess.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Thelbert test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jullian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Thelbert climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Thelbert's path sketches the road Jullian is walking now.
Jullian sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The name underneath is ancient, widely understood and carried without difficulty in English, Spanish, French and Italian.
- It gives a boy a short form, Jules, that works from the playground to a professional signature.
- It travels across the Spanish-speaking world with only an accent mark changing.
- The second l will be dropped by almost everyone who writes the name without looking, including teachers and clerks, for as long as he has it.
- This spelling is recorded for girls as well, though the boys have nearly all of it, and a girl carrying it will be assumed to be a boy on paper more often than the other way around.
- Julian, Julien and Julián are all in the same room; the name will be revised toward whichever one the listener knows best.
