The story of Julie
The calendar reform fixed a year of three hundred and sixty-five days with a leap day every fourth year, which is very close to right and not quite. The actual year is about eleven minutes shorter, and eleven minutes a year accumulates: by the sixteenth century the calendar had drifted ten days out of step with the sun, and Easter was sliding steadily toward summer. The correction, when it came, simply deleted ten days from October, and Catholic Europe went to bed on the fourth and woke on the fifteenth. Protestant countries refused for over a century on the grounds that it was a papal scheme, and Britain did not adopt it until seventeen fifty-two, by which point eleven days had to go. The month names survived all of it unchanged.
