Where it comes from

The story of Jule

That family claimed a goddess. The Julii traced themselves to Iulus, son of Aeneas, who was in turn the son of Venus — which made them, by their own account, descendants of a goddess and of the survivor of Troy. It was a genealogy nobody could check and everybody had to acknowledge, and it did a great deal of political work: temples were built on it, coins struck with it, and an empire eventually justified by it. The name is not important because of what it means. It is important because one family used it to make a claim about where they came from, and won.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Roman family name behind it has no established meaning, and the various derivations offered depend on the family's own claims about itself rather than on evidence. Nothing can be reported with confidence.

Jule sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1925, with 35 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jule sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable, four letters, and never needs spelling out twice.
  • It is a genuine French form rather than an invented shortening.
  • It works across the sexes without straining for it.
What to consider
  • No meaning can be given, because the Roman family name has none that is settled.
  • It leans to girls, but a real share of children with this spelling are boys, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
