The story of Julaine
The English word jewel came from Old French joel, and the best-supported account takes it back to the Latin jocus, a joke or a game — by way of a diminutive meaning a plaything or a pleasing trifle. That is the same jocus behind jocular, jocose and, at a distance, joke itself. The alternative account derives it from a word for a gem instead, and the two have been argued over for a long time without resolution. What makes the first one plausible is that the medieval senses fit: a joel was an ornament, a trinket, something given for pleasure rather than use, and the narrowing to precious stones came later. If it holds, then a crown jewel and a cheap joke are relatives, which is the kind of thing etymology produces regularly and nobody quite believes.

of the Julii
The Roman family name is secure; what it meant before it was a family name is not. The family itself claimed descent from Aeneas's son, which is a political claim rather than an etymology, and the modern gloss about youth rests on a late and unreliable connection. The added ending carries nothing.
Pronouncing Julaine
joo-LAYN
Two syllables with the stress at the back. The ending says ayn rather than the een of the French Julienne, which is the difference between this name and the French one it resembles.

Fashion outlook
Julaine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
- Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
- The Roman family behind it is genuinely ancient and thoroughly documented.
- Julianne, Julaine and Jolaine are all recorded and will be written for it.
- The ending looks French and is not said the French way, which trips readers up.
- The Roman name's original meaning is contested, so it has to be given with a qualification.
