Where it comes from

The story of Judit

Modern Hungarian spelling writes a t sound with a plain t; the old th survives only in a few aristocratic surnames such as Batthyány, where it is still said as t. Spanish and Catalan write no th either, so all three languages arrived at Judit. Judit Polgár, born in Budapest in 1976, was one of three sisters taught chess at home by their father, László Polgár. She earned the grandmaster title in 1991, taking Fischer's record for the youngest ever, and later climbed into the top ten of the overall world rankings, a place no other woman has reached.

Fashion outlook

Judit sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One spelling shared by Hungarian, Spanish and Catalan, so it reads as native in more than one heritage.
  • Carried by one of the most accomplished chess players of the modern era.
  • Short and two-syllable, with the familiar Judith behind it.
What to consider
  • English readers will say JOO-dit, and the Spanish or Hungarian pronunciation will need a word.
  • Forms will sometimes correct it to Judith, and it can take a line in a school file to keep the spelling as given.
