The Book of Judith is not in the Hebrew Bible. It survives in Greek, was kept by the Catholic and Orthodox churches and set aside by Protestant ones, and it tells the story of a widow who talks her way into an enemy general's tent and leaves with his head. The name means a woman of Judea, and it belongs to her.

Where it comes from

The story of Judie

The Judith of the deuterocanonical book is one of the more startling figures in the whole biblical literature: a wealthy widow who criticizes her town's leaders for negotiating, goes into the Assyrian camp with her maid, and comes back with the general's head in a bag. Renaissance painters could not leave the subject alone. The name reached English through both channels — the Genesis mention for Protestants, the book for everyone else — and became very widely used in mid-century America. Judie, Judy and Judi are three spellings of one short form.

Meaning

woman of Judea

Hebrew Yehudit is the feminine of Yehudi, a Judean or a Jew, from the tribal name Judah — so the name says where someone is from rather than what they are like. The derivation is settled. Judith also appears in Genesis as one of Esau's wives, which is the only place the name occurs in the text the Hebrew Bible contains, and it is a passing mention.

Judie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1943, with 378 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Judie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Judith is available as a formal long form with a genuinely dramatic history.
  • Jude works as a short form and suits either child.
  • Two syllables, entirely unambiguous, and easy in any accent.
What to consider
  • Judy is the standard spelling and this will be rewritten as that on most documents.
  • It reads as a nickname, and the long form has to be supplied by the family.
  • The name is very strongly associated with the mid twentieth century and dates a person closely.
