The Portuguese for god is deos, and traders on the south China coast used it constantly; Chinese pidgin English took it up as joss, meaning a god or an idol, and English sailors brought the word home. From there came joss house for a temple, joss stick for the incense burned in one, and joss in the sense of luck — as in joss pidgin, meaning religion, and the phrase about a person's joss being in or out. The word is not Chinese at all; it is a Portuguese word filtered through two more languages. English picked up a whole small vocabulary the same way in the same ports, including chop-chop, savvy, and the word pidgin itself, which is business.
