The people at the bottom of the name have a good claim to being the most consequential obscure tribe in northern Europe. The Gauts or Geats lived in what is now southern Sweden, gave their name to Gotland and to Gothenburg, are probably behind the name of the Goths who ended up in Spain and Italy, and are the people Beowulf belongs to: he is a Geat, sails from their country to Denmark, and goes home to rule them. Almost nothing else is known about them. A tribal name that reached England through Frankish personal names and then became a woman's given name in twentieth-century America has taken about as long a route as a word can take.
