Dark Shadows, which ABC ran on weekday afternoons from 1966 to 1971, turned a Gothic soap into a supernatural one when it introduced Barnabas Collins, a vampire from the eighteenth century. His fiancée in that century had been Josette du Prés, and the show's plots kept returning to her portrait and her ghost. The z spelling is not French, since French already says a single s between vowels as z, and no record says who first wrote the name with a z or why.
